Information
The initial office visit is approximately
1.5-hours long. The amount of time spent on the initial visit allows me to
take a thorough history, do a physical exam and provide a treatment.
Follow-up visits are 30-minutes
each. Some patients prefer to book double appointments (1-hour). This is typically
for patients with multiple injuries. You are normally treated once per week
to provide time for you to heal between each treatment.
The treatments consist of removing
built-up scar tissue in your muscles via Precision Muscle Balancing. The scar
tissue is caused from either trauma (falling, car accident, etc.), or repetitive
stress (usually work or activity related). This allows the tight muscles to
return to their proper length.
Please note, this therapy
is not a deep tissue massage and does involve discomfort while being treated.
Removing the scar tissue is painful. However, I put you in control of your
own tolerance. I will continue to ask you throughout the treatment if you’re
ok with the discomfort level. It is a no-pain/no-gain therapy.
After each treatment
you will most likely have muscle soreness in the areas I have treated. This
is similar to the soreness experienced after exercise and is not harmful.
The amount of soreness and length of time you are sore varies from patient
to patient. Typically, a patient’s soreness will peak on the second
day after the treatment and totally heals within 4 to 5-days. The soreness
is usually noticed with activity or being touched in the treated area. Factors
which influence the level of soreness include how injured the muscles are,
what area of the body was treated, how many times this area has been treated,
your age and health, etc. Usually, the first treatment causes the most soreness.
I believe this is due to your body never having experienced this type of treatment
before. Sometimes bruising occurs after the treatment. This
is not harmful and typically occurs when I work in the low back and buttock
areas. Some patients bruise easier than others.
There are three primary
things you can do to help speed up the healing process after each treatment.
The most important is to ice the areas treated for 20-minutes at a time. Ice
helps reduce inflammation and pain. Never put the ice or cold pack directly
on the skin. Always put a towel or t-shirt between your skin and the ice or
cold pack. Also, wait at least 20-minutes before you re-ice. Secondly, it
is best to avoid stressing the treated muscles for 2 to 3-days after each
treatment. The third thing is drink a lot of water! Also, taking
extra B-complex and C vitamins can help your muscles heal faster.
DO NOT USE HEAT IF YOU
ARE IN PAIN! Heat increases the inflammation, which is most likely the reason
you are in pain!
Sometimes you will feel
great after the treatment for a couple of days, but then your problem returns.
This is common (especially if you have just started with this therapy). It
indicates a very good chance your problem can be eliminated. All this means,
is you need more treatments to get your muscles to stay at the proper length.
Once this is accomplished, your body will be able to maintain its intended
anatomical alignment. Then you are ready to resume the quality of life you
seek.
Be aware that your body
(especially your spine), may undergo an unwinding process during the treatment
process. The longer you’ve had the problem, the more potential
compensations your body may have made to try to keep you out of pain. What
typically happens is your body finally runs out of compensations and you get
constant pain. A common example of this is a patient first has neck pain due
to a whiplash. They do nothing about it and their neck pain goes away all
by itself within a week. Then within a couple of months they start to get
low back pain for no reason. They come to me seeking relief of their low back
pain. I relieve their low back pain, and then their original neck pain returns.
What happened? The low back compensated for their original neck pain. When
I fixed the low back, the compensation for the neck was eliminated and their
neck pain returned. I fix the neck, and the unwinding process has been completed.
My goal is to fix your
problem as fast as possible and allow you to return to and maintain the quality
of life you’re looking for! The longer you’ve had the problem
and the more severe it is, the more treatments it will take to fix it. This
is due to all the compensations your body has made over the years. The bottom
line is this, the odds of me fixing your problem and getting you out of pain
are better than any other treatment I have had. I have been treated with most
of the traditional types of therapy and had an unsuccessful shoulder surgery.
I’m a jock who played football and baseball in college, hooped all my
life, and have been boxing for over 15-years. I know what injuries are all
about! I also know how to fix them.
