What Causes a Tight Muscle?
There are two major causes of tight muscles (Trauma & Repetitive Stress). The most obvious is trauma. Examples of trauma include car accidents, falling off a horse, skateboard, snowboard, bike etc. The other main cause is repetitive stress. This is usually done on a daily basis over long periods of time. It is often work or activity related. Some examples of causes of repetitive stress injuries include the following:
| Repetitive Use | Areas Effected |
| Typing, Grocery Checker, Auto-Mechanic | Forearm & Wrist Pain (carpal tunnel) |
Golfer, Baseball
Pitcher, Mountain Climber |
Medial Elbow Pain (golfer’s elbow–tendonitis) |
| Tennis Player | Lateral Elbow Pain (tennis elbow-tendonitis) |
| Truckers/Movers(excessive bending & lifting) | Low Back Pain (possible disc herniation) |
| Golfer (excessive twisting with each swing) | Low Back Pain (possible disc herniation) |
| Bad Posture (while sitting, standing, typing) |
Neck & Low Back Pain |
If you notice most elderly people have tighter muscles, restricted movement, and more aches and pains. It’s simply because they have had more years to accumulate scar tissue in their muscles.
